Space Rangers HD: A War Apart Introduction:
Space Rangers, also known as "Космические рейнджеры" in Russian, is a versatile computer game created by the Russian company Elemental Games and published by 1C Company in 2002. This game has received critical acclaim and garnered a significant following in Russia, Finland, and parts of Eastern Europe. However, it hasn't achieved widespread popularity in other regions primarily due to limited marketing efforts. A sequel titled "Space Rangers 2: Dominators" was released in 2004.
The game is characterized by its dynamic and open-ended gameplay, drawing comparisons to classics like Elite and Star Control 2. In Space Rangers, trade prices on planets fluctuate based on supply and demand, and the game features ongoing non-scripted conflicts as part of its immersive world. Computer-controlled ships have distinct capabilities, goals, and relationships, contributing to the game's depth. Furthermore, players have multiple options for completing the storyline.
Gameplay:
Gameplay in Space Rangers includes turn-based space travel and combat, optional shoot 'em up sequences, and occasional text adventure elements. Interestingly, this game was not released in America as a standalone product but rather bundled within special edition containers of "Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators."
The game's narrative revolves around a peaceful interstellar coalition facing an invasion by the formidable Klissans, who wield organic warships. Players assume the role of a Ranger, a non-military volunteer entrusted with a small ship, autonomy, and the mission of aiding in the battle against, understanding, and ultimately defeating this menacing threat.
The conflict's origins trace back to the aggressive Gaal race, which once expanded rapidly through the galaxy, enabled by their hyperjumper technology. Unfortunately, when one of their colonies encountered the Klissan fleet, communication attempts failed, leading to the destruction of Gaal colony ships. In response, the Klissans, led by their mothership Makhpella, launched an invasion of outer Gaal colonies. Faced with this dire situation, the Gaal colony fleet made a difficult decision: instead of retreating and allowing Makhpella to trace their route, they utilized the hyperjumper to destroy their remaining colonies, all in a bid to protect the original Gaal territories and their homeworld from invasion.
Final Words:
The catalyst for these events was a Peleng captain named Rachekhan, once a commander in the Peleng fleet but later turned pirate. Rachekhan's possession of a stolen hyperjumper set this chain of events in motion. As he traveled with the hyperjumper, he crossed paths with Makhpella, which viewed Rachekhan's pirate fleet as an adversary, leading to a relentless pursuit. During this chase, both Rachekhan and the Klissan fleets passed through sectors colonized by the interstellar coalition. This exposure allowed Makhpella to discover the locations of IC sectors and identify all IC races as enemies, thus triggering the onset of war.
